• Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in colour from dark grey, bright yellow, or deep purple to rusty red. The iron is usually found in the form of magnetite. The primary use of iron ore is in the production of iron. The main function of iron oxide is to impart color to the cement. At high temperatures, Iron oxide forms tricalcium aluminoferrite by reacting with aluminum and calcium. The resultant product imparts the strength and hardness properties to the cement.

• Mill scale is used as a source of iron during the production of steel and iron from scrap. When heated in a submerged arc furnace, very little slag is produced. As such, mill scale can be used as a reducing agent when one wants to make alloys devoid of impurities and slag. Mill scale contains high amounts of iron.
